Primary Purpose

To supervise and manage the school library by providing early childhood and elementary students enriched library resources containing a variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth and promote reading in a stimulating and creative environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Creates a library environment conducive to learning

Differentiates library lessons based on the age and stage of the students in attendance

Plans and conducts library/storytelling time for all students enrolled in day school (Preschool-5th grade)

Provides group and individual student/staff instruction using resources and research techniques

Plans and executes the library budget based on documented library and day school needs

Assists teachers with appropriate use of materials available for classroom instruction

Evaluates and recommends computer hardware and software supporting library operations for acquisition

Evaluates and recommends library materials for acquisition

Categorizes and catalogs acquired books, textbooks, and other library resources

Evaluates vendor services in terms of cost-effective service

Establishes library operating policies regarding circulation, collection access, hours of operation, etc.

Makes long-range plans for new and/or enhanced library services

Reviews, selects, and acquires appropriate materials and supplies for the library media center

Performs all circulation duties

Coordinates annual book fairs and monthly Books are Fun events

Maintains the children’s reading material display in the lobby

  • Maintains a positive and professional relationship with students, staff, and visitors
  • Works with teachers to select and acquire appropriate books, learning resources and periodicals
  • Exercises accountability and performs annual inventory of the library’s collections


Supervisory Responsibilities           

Supervise Assistants/Associates/Substitutes/Volunteers as required.                        


Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Master’s degree in Library Science with three plus years of library teaching in a public or private school, preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of library and information science, including library automation technology and all other informational technology pertinent to the educational well-being of students
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Valid Texas certification as a Librarian.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; sit; use hand to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; to include recurring activities such as bending, crouching, stooping ,and stretching; talk; hear and have good vision.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move 0-30 lbs.
