Job Title:                     Teacher Assistant

Position Status:           Exempt

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

Assists in the daily testing of hearing devices and placement of FM units on each child at the beginning of the school day

Under direction from the teacher, prepares worksheets and/or homework

Under direction from the teacher, corrects/grades some daily work and homework and turns over to classroom teacher for evaluation.

Assume responsibility for playground/gym activities during morning, noon, and/or afternoon recess periods

As required, assists children with special needs, i.e.:  diaper changing; toilet training, and other needs.

Review with children materials previously introduced by the classroom teacher.

Provide one on one and/or small group tutorial services on specific topics as directed by teacher.

Supervise the lunchroom/quiet time/recess.  Conduct language and vocabulary development conversations whenever possible. Take Language Samples

During the absence of the regular classroom teacher, if asked, assume the role of a substitute teacher until the teacher returns to duty.

Prepare visual aids and/or arts and crafts for student use

Assume the operation of classroom learning centers where a variety of academic based activities are supervised while the classroom teacher does tutorial or small group speech, language or reading activities.

Operate audio visual aids and equipment.  Utilize available technology, (i.e. Copier, Desktop, iPads, Laptops, Smart Boards).

Education and/or Experience

Teacher Assistant

Minimum High School diploma

Para-Professional Certification preferred (or obtained within first year of employment)

 

Language Skills

Communicate effectively with teachers and students alike

Bilingual preferred


Mathematical Skills

As required of a high school/GED graduate.


Reasoning Ability

Efficiently assist students in the classroom, lunchroom, playground and loading after school.


Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Maintain a valid driver’s license.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hand to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk; hear and have good vision.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move 0-20 lbs.
